Absolute power for large jobsites

VÖGELE Mobile Power Feeder offers cutting-edgetechnology that sets standards in modern road construction, both in terms ofquality and economic efficiency.

With the second-largest road network in theworld, spanning a total of 6.39 million kilometres (as per Economic Survey 2021),around 64.5 per cent of all goods in the country and 90 per cent of India’stotal passenger traffic uses road network to commute. The NationalInfrastructure Pipeline – of which Bharatmala Pariyojna is a part – has alsoaccelerated the construction of several Greenfield projects includingExpressways and mega highways. With such humongous ongoing and targetedconstruction of road infrastructure in the country, it becomes more pertinentfor the use of state-of-the-art innovative technologies for cost optimisationand quality results.

VÖGELE Mobile Power feeder offers cutting-edgetechnology that sets standards in modern road construction, both in terms ofquality and economic efficiency. This mobile feeder not only continues to gainpopularity for use in large highway projects but has also exponentiallycontributed to deliver excellent paving results.

Since 2006, the VÖGELE Mobile Power feeders havebeen in use in various National Highway Projects in the states of Haryana,Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat.

Job Site: Delhi–MumbaiExpressway

The 1350 km Delhi–Mumbai Expressway (DME)project (NH–148N/NE–4) is an under construction 8-lane access-controlled roadwith a route connecting DND in Delhi with JNPT in Mumbai. It has been designedwith a speed limit of 120 km/hr and provision to expand to 12 lanes in thefuture.

This new Greenfield expressway was approved forconstruction under the Bharatmala Pariyojana programme in 2017. This being amega Greenfield project is one of the ideal project sites for use of MobileFeeder although the following prerequisite parameters was checked/ensuredbefore the machine was physically moved to the job site:

  • Total quantity of Asphalt to be paved.

  • Current Paving methodology for 8-Lane carriageways of 18.75 mtr width.

  • Batch (Hot Mix) Plant Capacity.

  • Availability of the paving front or length.

  • Per day paving target (quantity and length).

  • Average lead of the paving site from plant location.

  • Availability and type of trucks used in Asphalt Mix Transport.

It was more interesting to have this jobsitebecause the opportunity was to use the Mobile Feeder on one units of VogeleAsphalt Paver S1800-3, which is working in echelon form with another paver andalso to use feeder on both the machines.

BOX:

Project Name:

Package 5 & 6 of Delhi – Mumbai Expressway

Location:

Dausa (Rajasthan)

Pavement:

Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) Width:- 18.75m

Layer thickness:- 50mm compacted

Equipment Used:

Power feeder

1 Vogele MT3000-2

Paver

2 Vogele Super 1800-3 with AB600-3TV Screed

Tandem rollers

4 Hamm HD99 tandem rollers

PTR

2 Hamm GRW 15

The paving process was carried out with AB 600-3TV screeds paving 18.75m width of SMA in single pass. MT 3000-2 power feederwas used for continuous and jerk free feeding.

Post completion of approximately 9.14 km ofpaving length and 10,000 tonnes of material paved, construction company siteteam from quality check and mechanical reported the following:

  • Continuous and more homogenous supply of mix: Uninterrupted paving andavoid feeding of segregated material to the paver hopper.

  • Jerk free paving operation because of contactless paving.

  • Eliminating the chances of having cold and hot spots in the pavingmat, thus eliminating compaction variance.

  • Increase in onboard material capacity.

  • Higher productivity.

  • Reduction in number of paving stops.

The outcome was an excellent ride quality, surface finish, and less manpower requirement during paving, thus reducing thechances of error due to human intervention in the paving process. There is nodirect contact between tippers/lorries and the pavers, which eliminates thejerk transfer from tippers to the pavers thereby diminishing the chances of bumpformation on the mat.

Non-contact and continuous paving makes thepavement completely undulation free. Homogeneous material being supplied by theconical augers ensures uniform temperature mix being supplied to the paver, which eliminates chances of thermal segregation throughout the mat. Twoinfrared heaters present on the conveyor ensure no material sticks to theconveyor belt, which improves the life of the conveyor.

Power feeders are perfectly suited forhot-to-hot paving in which two pavers work side-by-side paving large width insingle pass with elimination of longitudinal joint. Paving multiple lanesside-by-side (with adjacent pavers slightly offset) can remove the longitudinaljoint between pavers because both mats are hot when initially compacted. Rollersbehind the echelon pavers can pass directly over the longitudinal joint whileboth sides are hot, which results in better compaction.

As per user feedback, undulation in paved layerby power feeder has been reduced significantly. “Surface quality improvement isthe utmost advantage of Power feeder,” a user acknowledges.

Unique features ofVÖGELE MT 3000-2 Offset Power Feeder

  • Uninterrupted paving due to a total storage capacity of 45t with amaximum conveying capacity of 1,200 tph.

  • Non-contacting material transfer makes for enhanced pavement quality.

  • Homogenized mix in the receiving hopper of the material feeder due toconical augers.

  • Wide range of applications due to the pivoting and inclining conveyor.

  • Reliable material transfer based on automatic distance control andanti-collision protection.

  • Powered with Deutz Engine with 142 kW at 2000 rpm supplemented withECO mode 139 kW at 1800 rpm.

  • Conveyor pivoting angle range of ±55 degrees with two infrared heatingpanels.

  • Optimum visibility and safety due to the convenient and practicalErgoPlus operating concept.

  • Ergoplus operating console offering upgraded ergonomics, safety, andvisibility.

New generation ofmaterial feeders from VÖGELE

These feeders guarantee constant, smooth transferof material and now offer paving teams numerous practical new features, such asthe MT 3000-3 Standard and MT 3000-3 Offset Power Feeders from world marketleader VÖGELE integrate the latest Dash-3 machine concept and an optimizedconveying and maintenance system.

ErgoPlus 3, Autosetplus and PaveDock Assistantare some of the key features which enhance the ergonomics and ease of operationof the Vogele power feeder.

Proof of the pudding

BIPL compliments Ammann Apollo for a workhorse – the ARS 121 Soil Compactor.

Do Ammann compactors really eliminate passes? Avinash Bhartia, Director of Bhartia Infra Projects Ltd. (BIPL) certainly believes so. Writing to the Ammann Apollo team, he states that BIPL has been able to achieve the compaction in fewer passes, “which is resulting in overall savings in diese   READ MORE...
